Anemia
Anemia Symptoms may include: Fatigue and lack of energy – Pale or yellowish skin – Shortness of breath (especially during exercise) – Rapid or irregular heartbeat (palpitations) – Dizziness or lightheadedness – Cold hands and feet – Chest pain – Headaches – Brittle nails or “spoon-shaped” nails – Unusual cravings (such as ice or dirt) – Restless legs syndrome – Tongue swelling or soreness.
Iron Deficiency vs. Vitamin Deficiency Anemia: While iron deficiency is the most common cause, anemia can also result from a lack of Vitamin B12 or Folate (B9), which are essential for producing healthy red blood cells. Symptoms like “brain fog,” numbness in hands, or a sore tongue often point toward these vitamin deficiencies rather than just low iron levels.
The Role of Full Blood Count (FBC) & Ferritin: The Hemoglobin (Hb) level in a blood test measures the protein in your red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout your body. Ferritin levels indicate your body’s iron stores. A low level of hemoglobin or ferritin within a health screening suggests anemia, even if you feel relatively healthy. Conversely, high levels of certain markers can sometimes indicate underlying chronic conditions. Understanding the balance between your iron, B12, and red blood cell count is crucial for restoring your energy and long-term vitality.
